Catching Up With St Richards Hospice

THIS week we caught up with Ria Simons, charity fundraiser at St Richard’s Hospice, to find out what has changed since the pandemic.

How did covid affect fundraising?

We had to Furloug staff that were not essential to caring for patients. All events organised by St Richard’s Hospice were Cancelled along with all community events. Major events such as the London Marathon were cancelled which people often take part in to raise funds for us.  The  hospice shops closed too.  But our care STILL had to continue! Covid didn’t stop our patients needing our support.

So, what did you do?

As a fundraising team we did not sit back and let things take their own cause – we made things happen – we had no choice!! We were savvy, innovative and worked hard to ensure as much revenue flowed in as physically possible. We also used government schemes such as furlough and grants and organised as many events online as we could.

What happened to your services during the pandemic?

Our In Patient Unit Remained open although there was restricted visiting and a dramatic change in hospice nursing techniques. Living Well team helped patients to set up IT at home so that they can take part in activities virtually, such as regular check-ups, art therapy, reiki, breathing exercises, pain management and much more. Hospice at home  continued with full PPE and some virtual support. Family support calls were made virtually so counselling for patients and families continued.

What now for fundraising?

Despite the pandemic we have achieved a good level of fundraising revenue, although there is a huge deficit and it’s predicted that the next financial year will be a tough one! The Fundraising and event landscapes have changed drastically and it will take some time to build this back up to where we were pre covid, if at all. The fundraising team must continue to be innovative with fundraising events and initiatives. Our community’s support is needed now more than ever.
