Duke of Edinburgh Award

YEAR 9 students have started their expedition training with a day walk involving map reading skills, awareness of the environment, the Countryside Code, recognising hazards and managing risks. Over 3 days 5th and 6th of February and the 5th March 34 students to date have completed a training day on Bredon Hill. They all walked a distance of 11kms with a height gain of nearly 300metres in dry and chilly conditions so it was a definitely a  4-layer day and hats!!

All groups managed to navigate to a variety of features such as Banbury Tower, Sundial Barn, footpath junctions and a hidden quarry for lunch out of the wind.

Year 10 Silver Training Day Sunday 6th March

THE following students completed a navigation and refresher day across the Suckley and Alfrick Hills to the west of Worcester. Silver requires longer days on the hill and more complex navigation. A distance of 16.7 kms was covered but more importantly with a height gain of 480 metres starting at Great Witley and finishing at Crews Hill near Alfrick.  Another stunning day with fantastic views but cold despite the sun. The students navigated in two independent teams with staff input where there were known issues such as poor footpath signage, road crossings and footpath diversions not marked on the map. Thanks to Ms Beard and Ms Ledbury who assisted with the training along with Mr Townshend who acted as back-up and managed the road issues.

Henry Welsby, Year 10 who took part in the Silver expedition said, “It was an enjoyable day but a tough walk. We went from Whitley

through Suckley Hill and Knightwick and ended

at Alfrick. We completed the walk ahead of planned time and the weather was good considering the storms we have had recently.”

Anjes van der Kleijn , Year 10 said, “ It was a very hilly walk with really nice scenery. We worked well as a team. At one point, we went slightly off route, but using our map reading skills, we managed to get back on track.”
