Rowing Success for Miss Higham

MISS Higham, Curriculum Leader for science recently competed in The Women’s Eights Head of the River Race, which was founded in the 1930s with 5 crews participating and has now become the largest women’s rowing race in the world with around 2,880 women racing and up to 320 crews taking part. It is the only race in the UK where novices can compete in the same race as Olympic champions and as such attracts a wide range of rowers from clubs and universities.

Worcester rowing club sent 4 women’s teams to compete in this event this year which is very rare as most clubs send one team. Miss Higham said, “Our team trained for this since the start of January, training 4 times a week both on land and in the boat. This was even more challenging during the floods as our club house and training facilities were under water. Kings school gave us access to their gym to allow us to continue with training during this time.

Taking part in the race was very daunting at times, the river Thames is very tidal and at times it felt like we were rowing out at sea, especially as we past Fulham football club but we were kept motivated by our cox who could be hear over the wind! The race was 8km, we didn’t win but we had so much fun taking part and it was so inspiring to see so many women involved in sport. I even spotted Helen Glover rowing past with her team. She is ranked GB number 1 and part of team GB for Olympics.”
