STUDENTS have shown that when we listen to music, our brains release dopamine, which in turn makes us happy. We can like a song because of the lyrics of the song, the music or simply because other people also like the song. People listen to music when they need a distraction or to enhance a workout. As of 2020 the most used music streaming service used for music was Spotify. Different music streaming services may be very beneficial for our use and entertainment however for smaller music producer it is very hard to make a living from just producing music. This is because (as of 2019), Spotify reported that it only pays between $0.00331 and $0.00437 per stream. Therefore, even if a song was to achieve 1 million streams the producer may only make about £3000. This means an average artist would have to get roughly 3.7 million streams on a song to even make the minimum wage (£11,000). Also, the record label or manger often want to earn a profit meaning the number of streams needed to reach minimum wage increases even more. In the UK the price of living a moderate life style is about £30000, this would be equivalent to 10 million streams. This is usually a large restriction to many music artists, who cannot live of just making songs.
If you and 4 of your friends were to listen to 31 seconds (the minimum time need for artists to make money from the song) of a song on repeat it would take you 16 days non-stop (384 hours) to make the artist $1000. Just to put music on Spotify it cost either £9.99 for 1 song or £29.99 for 2 or more songs.
